The Missing Peace

A brief analysis of the gendered impact of the Second Karabakh War

This brief, published in 2020, looks at the escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorny-Karabakh from the point of view of the women in these communities. It aims to keep a focus on women human rights defenders and women peacebuilders’ priorities and roles.

The paper begins with a literature review, looking at the situation pre-escalation, including negative peace, shrinking civic space, propaganda and fake news. It also covers the impact of Covid-19. It then asks “What are the women doing here and now?” and highlights the immediate needs and priorities of women human rights defenders and peacebuilders.
